St Combs to Strathbeg circular

Distance; 5 miles

Facilities; Shop and toilets in St CombsSt Combs Beach

The walk starts in the village of St Combs; an eighteenth century fishing village, approximately 5 miles from Fraserburgh.  From the car park walk down onto the shore noting the wreck of the Finnish vessel, ‘Anna’ who ran aground in 1959, from here head south along the beach. Continue along the shore watching out for Grey seals basking on the rocks until you reach the outflow of the Loch of Strathbeg. The walk heads in land here around the side of the lagoon onto the path beside the small canal (keeping to the beach side). From here follow the small, but well worn path behind the dunes back to St Combs crossing the wooden bridge over the burn then turn away from the shore and follow the track which meets the lane by a parking area. Take the lane until it meets the main road and walk back through St Combs to the start at Gordon Street.

Things of interest along the way to look out for include; Grey seals, Minke whales and dolphins, gannets, eider ducks (and ducklings), corn buntings, terns, burnet moths, dark green fritillaries and the abundance of wild flowers most notably  the section after the lagoon especially the lane verges after leaving the dunes.
